Art, Meet the Future.

York Mediale is an international media arts festival which celebrates York as the UK’s first and only UNESCO Creative City of Media Arts.

Who we are

We are an independent arts charity founded in 2014 to celebrate the designation of York as the UK’s first and only UNESCO Creative City of Media Arts.

Every two years, we deliver an international media arts festival, the first of which took place in October 2018.

With audiences of 65,000 and a further 91 million reached online, we soon became the UK’s largest media arts festival.

As well as bringing new commissions from leading artists to the city for the festival, we provide opportunities for the best emerging talent to showcase their art.

Through incorporating technologies into their works, artists of all kinds will challenge, provoke, interrogate and celebrate our cities, our landscapes and our lives.

Who we work with

In 2018, we worked with 113 leading artists from as far afield as Japan and Kenya, and from as close by as Acomb and Tang Hall.

We are passionate about pushing the boundaries of media arts. Searching in unusual places to find diverse talent, and addressing the enormous gender and race inequality in digital and media art is integral to the programming approach of all our festivals.
