York - a UNESCO Creative City of Media Arts

The City of York is the UK’s first, and only, UNESCO Creative City of Media Arts, receiving the designation in December 2014.

Receiving this designation acknowledges and exemplifies York as a forward thinking, innovative, talent focussed champion of the cultural industries; a city that places creativity at the heart of local development plans and actively collaborates with other world-leading, international cities.

Other global Creative Cities of Media Arts are currently:
Changsa (China); Lyon (France); Guadalajara (Mexico); Toronto (Canada); Austin (USA); Dakar (Senegal); Linz (Austria); Tel Aviv (Israel); Sapporo (Japan); Enghien-les-Bains (France); Braga (Portugal); Gwangju (South Korea).

The complete UNESCO Creative cities network includes 180 cities in 72 countries across 7 categories. These categories are: Film, Design, Music, Literature, Gastronomy, Crafts and Folk Art, and Media Arts.
