Interactive Audiences w/ Black Mirror: Bandersnatch

10 June 2019

With very little warning, towards the end of 2018, Netflix dropped a new episode of Black Mirror. Set in 1984, this smash hit interactive film is about a young programmer who begins to question reality as he adapts a dark fantasy novel into a video game. Throughout the film, the audience chose the path of the protagonist using their remote controls, resulting in a mind-bending tale with multiple endings.

In collaboration with the Guild of Media Arts, we were delighted to invite York to an evening with Russell McLean, Producer of Black Mirror: Bandersnatch where he explained the challenges of producing Netflix’s first adult interactive film, from writing through to editing and coding the story.

Sharon Reid, co-owner of the world’s leading performance capture studio The Imaginarium Studios, joined Russell on stage to talk about the future of immersive and interactive storytelling.

Hosted by Pilot Theatre’s Lucy Hammond, it was a fascinating evening.

I saw a film on Facebook about the Mediale festival last year and felt a real connection to the work. When I saw this event, I just had to come over to York! Thank you for your hospitality, your team is so kind and welcoming.
