Strata – Rock – Dust – Stars

September - November 2018

A landmark exhibition featuring moving image, new media and interactive artwork, Strata – Rock – Dust – Stars took its inspiration from William Smith’s ground-breaking geological map, ‘Delineating Strata’, which identified the layers of the Earth and transformed the way in which the world was understood. It was the most ambitious and large-scale media art exhibition York had ever hosted.

Co-commissioned by York Art Gallery and York Mediale, and curated by Mike Stubbs, former Director of FACT Liverpool, the exhibition featured works by artists Isaac Julien, Agnes Meyers Brandis, Semiconductor, Phil Coy, Liz Orton, David Jaques and Ryoichi Kurokawa.

It not only examined geological strata, but also explored a timely and contemporary poetic layer-ing of human curiosity, exploration and reflection on the universe.

“I urge everyone, no matter your interests, to travel to York to see Strata – Rock – Dust – Stars. This exhibition boasts the importance of interdisciplinary thought, combining science and art to examine and reflect on our everyday actions, our own place in history and alternative landscapes. Stunning.”
